Common Rug Sizing Mistakes
Avoid these errors that make even expensive rugs look wrong.
The Floating Island
A small rug in the center of the room with all furniture off it. This makes the space look disconnected and the rug look like an afterthought.
Dining Chair Slip-Off
A rug that fits the table but leaves chairs hanging off the edge when pulled out. Chairs scrape and catch on the rug border.
Bedroom Bath Mat
A rug so small it only peeks out from under the bed frame. No soft landing when you step out of bed.
The Golden Rules of Rug Sizing
Rug must extend 18-24 inches beyond each side of the bed. This ensures a soft landing when you wake up.
Rug must extend 24 inches beyond the table on all sides. Chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
At minimum, front legs of all seating should rest on the rug. This anchors the conversation area.
A too-small rug is the #1 decorating mistake. If you're between sizes, always size up.
